I then removed the plastic piece on the inside of the boot, undid the screws holding the backing plate of the wiper mechanism and found the cogs inside to be perfectly fine, no cracks or anything that looked odd, I removed the two metal parts, leaving just the plastic cog, turned on the wiper again and the plastic cog spun without issues. I added the two metal parts back, turned on the wiper a couple of times more and now either the wiper would get stuck again or it would make the metal part that sticks into the plastic cog just fall out completely. I then tried re-lubricated everything on the inside, but no luck with that either. The car has a tad over 100k km on it, but I don't know how much the rear wiper has been used by the previous owner, though I suspect it's been used quite a bit.
